An Important Mother’s Day Public Service Announcement

May 10th, 2015 marks as Mother’s Day this year for Americans. As such, many will participate in gift-giving, tributes, and acts of service that will demonstrate the appreciation of the mothers and mother-figures that we have in our lives. If you are one of these people, I know you will do it with your heart because you appreciate the amazing woman/women in your life that have been your mother-figure or a mother-figure for others you hold dear. But as you celebrate, keep in mind the following:

  • Think of the fact that not everyone has a healthy relationship with their mother, that the hands of a mother that society personifies to be epitome of gentleness have been everything but that to them.
  • Think of the kids who have had endure those arts and crafts sessions at school with paper hearts, letters, tributes, and handprints made to be given to their mothers only to end up in the trash can because they have no mother to give them to.
  • Think of those who force themselves to save face in the midst of Mother’s Day excitement to hide the excruciating pain of losing their baby due to miscarriage or after birth.
  • Think of the women who find this day to be wrestling match in which they fight the demons that tell them they are less of a woman because they cannot conceive.
  • Think of the fact that there are those with birth moms who are long gone and stepmoms who have stepped into their lives that they have come to appreciate. Think on how this day can be overwhelmingly bittersweet for them.
  • Think of the likelihood that there will be eyes that gaze upon the list and hearts that find points that they identify with.
  • Think of the likelihood that there are other frequently unmentioned experiences on Mother’s Day that failed to be written here. Those are also important.
  • Think of the fact that the very hands that write this post can identify with two of the things mentioned here.
